The nine-day tour came to a sensational end today at Dataran Merdeka when Mauro Abel Richeze of the CSF Group-Navigare team won the 73km long Stage 9, also known as the KL Criterium.

Serramenti PVC, led by the effervescent Gianni Savio, have been consistent performers in the Le Tour de Langkawi and after disappointments in the last two years, charged back this year in a big way when Ruslan Ivanov wrested the yellow jersey and the team cemented the overall title after yesterday’s climb up Fraser’s Hill. FRASER’S HILL (16 Feb, 2008) – The stage might have gone to Filippo Savini but the day belonged to Ruslan Ivanov as he snatched the yellow jersey at the end of Stage Eight from Temerloh to Fraser’s Hill to ensure his Serramenti PVC team ends Le Tour de Langkawi 2008 on a high note tomorrow.

And with a 29-second lead going into tomorrow’s KL Criterium, Ivanov and Serramenti are all set to claim the silverware at the Dataran Merdeka tomorrow evening.

Serramenti, which won the pivotal climb up Genting Highlands in 2006 and 2007 but failed to win the General Classification, had their fortunes reversed this time round when they sacrificed the stage to Savini (CSF Group Navigare) to concentrate on winning the overall title. Continue Reading »

Le Tour de Langkawi 2008 Stage 7 crash

This is the first time I witness a cycling crash that close, it was just less than 50 meters from me. Everything happened so fast, I wasn’t sure what was going on except that everyone was stunt and panic. Right after the crash, everyone ran towards the riders that were lying on the ground.

BANDAR PENAWAR (14 Feb, 2008) – Jose Serpa proved that he is as good in the climb as he is on flat terrain when he raced to the front of a 15-man breakaway to win Stage Six of Le Tour de Langkawi 2008 from Bandar Penawar to Rompin this evening.

The romping finish for Serpa, who had dominated the climb up Genting Highlands in 2006 and 2007, was a little unexpected as he had to contend with having well-known sprinter Jeremy Hunt (Credit Agricole) in the front group.

But in the end, Serpa proved that he not only had the strength but also the ability to finish the 182.8km race well ahead of the others with a time of 4h26’43”. Continue Reading »
