USA team in search of World Championship medals

The USA has confirmed a small but powerful team for the UCI Track Cycling World Championships 26th – 30th March in Manchester.

The American team will be encouraged by recent results in the final round of the World Cup in Copenhagen this month. Sarah Hammer took the bronze in Denmark in the women’s individual pursuit and her consistent form throughout the four World Cup events saw her finish second overall in the series.

Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colorado) showed his form in Copenhagen when he finished 5th in the points race after he had taken points in a number of the sprints and worked hard in a strong group that lapped the field. Pearce had also teamed up with Bobby Lea in Copenhagen in the men’s Madison where the pair had joined the Danish team lapping the field and the American duo finished second in the tough race.  Pearce will race in the Madison with Michael Friedman while Lea will compete in the men’s Omnium event in Manchester.

Young Taylor Phinney will be racing in the world championships for the first time in the Elite category of the men’s individual pursuit. Taylor is son of former top professional Davis Phinney who alongside Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong is one of only three Americans who won multiple stages of the Tour de France. Taylor is only 17 and became world junior time trial champion last year. This year he won the gold medal in the individual pursuit in Los Angeles and finished second in the World Cup series overall.

Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Washington) has showed this year that she is in the women’s sprint competitions to win medals when she finished second in the sprint and first in the Keirin in Los Angeles. The Keirin is her strongest event and she will have a tough battle against strong riders like current world champion Victoria Pendleton and on-form Willy Kanis (Netherlands)

Tickets for Saturday have already sold out but are still available for the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Ticket information can be found on links at  the official event site at
