Italian Sprinting Star gives MILRAM its second season victory

19 February 2008.  MILRAM  captain Alessandro Petacchi used a strong performance to take the sprint victory in the third stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista del Sol (17.02-21.02/UCI 2.1).  The MILRAM captain was led to the leading group by his teammates Christian Knees and Marco Velo.  The 34 year-old Italian showed his class in the finale
and took MILRAM’s second win in the current season.  Places two and three went to the Italians Giovanni Visconti (QuickStep) and Riccardo Ricco (Saunier Duval).

“That was anything but an easy stage today.  The fact that I won shows what a good physical condition I have,“ said MILRAM captain Alessandro Petacchi.  “There were many difficult mountains, especially the last one, only 14 km before the finish.  The finish line was atop a short climb.  About 100 meters before that I started my sprint and was able to hold my lead on the ascent against the two climbers Giovanni Visconti and Riccardo Ricco.  I hope that in the next two days we will be equally successful and be able to bring in more wins for our team.”

“That was really something else from Alessandro Petacchi today,” said MILRAM’s Christian Knees.  “It was a very difficult stage, with lots of climbs and permanent attacks out of the field.  Marco Velo and I did the lead work and helped to close the gap to the forward group, in order to bring Alessandro into position.  He rode the closing sprint all alone, and that just goes to show how strong Alessandro Petacchi is.”

The 174,5 km long stage from Otura to Jaén was marked by many attacks and much work by Team MILRAM and Skil-Shimano.  Both teams used their good teamwork to bring the field back together at the end and thereby bring about the sprint finish.  Flat stages await on the last two racing days, Wednesday, February 20, from La Guardia de  Jaén to Ecija,
and on Thursday, February 21, from Antequera to Cordoba.
