Paddy Martin President of Bray Wheelers

The announcement yesterday that Paddy Martin President and Life member of the Bray Wheelers had passed away in his sleep on Thursday morning (14th of February) took members of the Bray Wheelers and cycling enthusiasts up and down the country by shock.

Paddy was a committed ‘Wheeler’ and had been involved with the club all his life.

He served in many capacities on committees down the years. All his life he was nurturing the youth that joined the club and knew everybody by their first name which made being a member very pleasant indeed.

From day one, he was keen that the ‘Wheelers’ would have their own club house and in the late 60’s through the generosity of the Bray Urban District Council a plot was allocated to the club on the Upper Dargle Road in Bray.

For many years that clubhouse was the focal point in the day to day activities of a club that was well known far and wide beyond our shores.

Over two years ago he was the proudest man in the club when he officially opened the new clubhouse close to the Southern Cross.

Back last September the Bray Council honoured the club at an official function in the Town Hall Bray with an award for services rendered to the community. It was deserving and the fact that Paddy accepted it was all the more pleasing.

Thankfully, the old and the new clubhouse and the recognition of the Council will be the clubs abiding memory of a pillar of strength who passed this way and for those who knew him he was indeed a tower of strength.

To his wife Tess, daughter Gillian, sons, Tony and David and immediate family members, heartfelt sorrow at your loss.

‘Ar ddheis De go raibh a anam dilis.’

May he rest in Peace.
