2008 TOUR DOWN UNDER BEGINS

South Australia this morning will celebrate becoming the first stop in world cycling at an official Tour Down Under welcome parade in the city.

Thousands of people are expected to line King William Street from 8am to witness a parade of team cars, bikes and 133 of the best cyclists in the world.

This parade will signify the arrival of UCI ProTour in South Australia.

Premier Mike Rann says the parade will kick off the 2008 Tour Down Under, which heads to Mawson Lakes later in the morning for the start of the Stage 1 race to Angaston.

“Sunday night was a magnificent curtain raiser to this year’s historic Tour, heralding the arrival of the elite UCI ProTour league in South Australia,” Premier Rann says.

“This morning we have a chance to give the riders the best possible send off and show the level of excitement the arrival of UCI ProTour has brought to our State.”

Day 1 highlights
8.30am to 9.30am: Official welcome parade in King William Street, Adelaide.

11.00am: Stage 1 racing action begins on The Promenade at Mawson Lakes, heading north along Main North Road.

11.20am (approx): World-class cyclists will battle it out for the Brilliant Blend King of the Mountain jersey at Black Top Road, Gould Creek.

12.20pm (approx): If speed is more your style, base yourself along the Barossa Valley Highway at Kauffmann St, Lyndoch for the first SA Lotteries Sprint.

1.15pm (approx): The second SA Lotteries Sprint will take place along Murray Street at Nuriootpa.

2.20pm (approx): Day 1 racing action will conclude in Murray Street Angaston.

All day: Angaston will host a Tour Down Under Street Party in Murray Street from 9.30am to 5pm, with loads of activities including music, children’s entertainment, food and drink stalls along with a celebrity bike race, Classic Veterans Race and the presentation of the jerseys make for a fun day out.
